Amazing pictures from the World Beard and Moustache Championships

More than 300 facial hair enthusiasts from around the globe converged on Leogang, Austria, to compete in the World Beard and Moustache Championships.

The annual event spans three days with participants sporting their gravity-defying facial hair styles across three categories – the moustache, partial beard and full beard. Within these three categories there are 17 sub-categories (everything from “Dali” moustaches to “Garibaldi” full beards) with the “freestyle” sub-categories a popular discipline for creative, gravity-defying designs.

"We have 18 different categories and the jury decides who gets to compete in which category,” said Willi Preuss, one of the event’s organisers. “And then they judge whether the beard is grown in the way it is supposed to (according to the category)."

Each beard is carefully judged by a panel of facial hair experts, with gold, silver and bronze winners awarded. While an increasing amount of competitors are adopting the au natural look, many beard-wearers employ staggering amounts of gel, pomade and hair spray to get their design just right.

"I had to build this beard over two, three hours to get this result,” said Armin Knapp, one of the competitors. “Of course, in daily life you do not make such an effort."

The first world championships was held in Germany in 1990, and since then the event has grown significantly in popularity and participation. The next event is set to take place in Brooklyn, New York, in November.

Related links:

From manscaping to grandscaping: how to get Sean Connery’s eyebrows

NASA releases 10,000 never-before-seen photos of Apollo missions

Then and now: portraits of dogs from puppyhood to old age

Hugh Jackman reveals new look

Australia’s favourite Hollywood star has been sporting a fair amount of facial hair since growing it for his role as Wolverine in the upcoming X-Men series movie. But Hugh Jackman has officially said goodbye to the 17-year long role that made him a star.

In a video posted to Instagram, which you can see above, the 47-year-old shaved his signature beard and sideburns. Harrison Ford’s unrecognisable with new beard

Harrison Ford is sporting some new facial hair, and boy does he look different. The 73-year-old showcased a new, silver surfer stubble last march, yet he’s taken it even further with a very scruffy number indeed.

The screen legend has been recovering from an accident on the set of the new Star Wars movie, which left him with a broken leg.

It was revealed last week that the company responsible for the accident, in which a metal Millenium Falcon door hit the actor, causing his leg to break, is being taken to court and will face an “unlimited” fine.

He’s not letting it slow him down though. Ford, who played Han Solo in the Star Wars trilogy that hit cinema screens between 1977 and 1983, will also reprise his iconic role of Rick Deckard in a Blade Runner sequel.

What do you think of Harrison’s new look? Bearded man mistaken for girlfriend on international flight

A burly bouncer was allowed to fly from England to Germany, despite looking nothing like the petite brown-haired beauty shown on his passport.

The shocking security stuff-up happened when 6'3" bouncer Josh Reed picked up his girlfriend's passport by mistake as he made his way to London's Stansted Airport to jet off on a football trip.

It wasn't until the Ryanair flight had landed in Dortmund that Reed realised he was actually carrying the passport of his pregnant partner.

Despite increased security measures around the world - not one person noticed that Reed was flying on a different passport.

Speaking to TheLadBible, Reed told of his shock at the mistake.

"I was just completely shocked at how the hell I look like a small brunette female.

"It's terrible that it wasn't noticed at all."

Luckily Reed was able to get through German security using his driver’s licence. His girlfriend then managed to courier his passport to him for the return leg home.

"Just makes me wonder how many people are going in and out of the country with passports that look like them, let alone a opposite sex passport," Reed added.

This is not as uncommon as people might think. Just last week there was a story about a woman who managed to board the wrong plane, with the wrong airline - all under the wrong name.

The incident is reported to have happened at Taiwan Airport when a woman, known as "Ms Hong" was flying to Hong Kong.

The first error in the series of incredible events happened when she checked into the Cathay Pacific desk - instead of Hong Kong Airlines.

Despite checking in with the wrong carrier, Hong was processed. She was also holding a boarding pass that belonged to a man with the same surname, also flying to Hong Kong.

First appeared on Stuff.co.nz.

Related links:

10 USA destinations with spectacular scenery

Top 10 landmarks to visit in 2016

10 Aussie wildlife parks you have to visit
